Arc The Lad is a franchise of video games, anime, manga and albums created by Toshiro Tsuchida in 1994. The series spans multiple media formats and received widespread success most notably in Japan although the series did have moderate success in the United States as well.

Due to the popularity of Role-Playing Games in Japan Sony Computer Entertainment wished for a RPG to be developed for their new console the Sony PlayStaion. They wanted this RPG to show off the technical capabilities of this new console as well, developer G-Craft who was known for developing the successful Front Mission series was chosen to head this new development.
